#MeToo: SC declines urgent hearing for FIRs based on allegations

New Delhi, News24 Bureau, Oct 22: There is a new development in the ongoing #MeToo movement as the apex court today refused to hear urgently the mentioning by a lawyer seeking suo motu cognisance or action by the National Commission of women against all the accused persons in the #MeToo movement. The Supreme Court declined urgent hearing on a PIL seeking the registration of FIRs based on allegations of sexual misconduct and assault levelled by women across various sectors.

Besides FIRs, the petition also seeks a direction to the National Commission for Women to give security and assistance to women who have come out in the open with their allegations.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice S K Kaul told lawyer M L Sharma, who had filed the petition, that it will come up for hearing in the regular course.
