New Delhi: It was special day on Thursday for democracy, for Rajya Sabha, for the country and for Prime Minister Narendra for two reasons. One, that all GST Bills were passed paving way for the one-nation one-tax principle. Second, that former PM Manmohan Singh Modi helped PM Modi to take the credit for the biggest tax reform in the country since Independence.
Just before the voting on the four bills, after an eight-hour debate, Manmohan Singh intervened and asked his party members not to seek changes in the GST Bills to "maintain consensus and federal agreement."
Congress is the largest party in RS, and without its support, amendments moved by other opposition parties like the Trinamool Congress and the Left were voted down.
Eventually, the RS passed all the 4 bills, paving the way for roll out of the historic Goods and Services Tax (GST) from the target date of July 1.The Lok Sabha had passed these bills on March 29.
