Justice Sanjay Mishra sworn in as UP Lokayukta

Lucknow: After nearly a delay of two years, Justice Sanjay Mishra was appointed as the new Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

The new Lokayukta was administered oath by Governor Ram Naik at a brief function at Raj Bhawan.

The ceremony saw UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and two other members of the selection panel- Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court D Y Chandrachud and leader of the opposition Swami Prasad Maurya in attendance.

Mr. Mishra would be replacing justice (retd) N K Mehrotra, who was appointed Lokayukta on March 16, 2006 and had a nearly ten-year tenure.

The appointment of Lokayukta had sparked a major controversy last year with the Governor refusing to accept the name of Justice (retd) Raveendra Singh and asking the chief minister to follow proper procedure for selecting the ombudsman.

Following a petition questioning the delay, the Supreme Court on December 14 had ordered the appointment to be made in two day. However, the panel failed to strike a consensus.

The apex court then appointed Justice Virendra Singh as Lokayukta. The appointment, however, was stayed by the apex court itself on January 28.
