Lucknow: A tragic accident took place near Manikpur in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, leading to the deaths of 14 people.
The dead included six children. The victims, who were members of a marriage party, were travelling in an SUV which crashed into a stationary truck. There were no survivors.
The police had to use gas cutters and needed more than three hours to retrieve the dead bodies from the ruins of the vehicle which had turned into a mangled heap of metal.
According to the police, the accident took place on the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway during the intervening night of November 19-20.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has condoled the deaths and has directed the administration to provide all help to the families of the victims.
Additional Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya later reached the site of the accident in order to review the situation. He informed the media that all 14 bodies had been sent for post mortem.
All the victims hailed from Kunda in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. The were returning after attending a marriage ceremony in Nawabganj.
According to sources, the driver of the SUV may have fallen asleep, which led to the accident.
