Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday released the party's first list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. She said that there are 50 women in Congress' first list comprising 125 names.


"Out of the total 125 candidates, 40 per cent are women and 40 per cent are the youth. With this historic initiative, we hope to bring in a new kind of politics in the state," she said.


She added, "In the first list of 125 candidates for UP polls, 50 candidates are women, including Asha Singh, mother of the Unnao rape victim. From Shahjahanpur, we have fielded Asha worker Poonam Pandey who led an agitation for a raise in honorarium."


The Election Commission of India had on Saturday announced that Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases from February 10 to March 7.


The first phase of polling will be held on February 10, followed by second phase on February 14, third phase on February 20, fourth phase on February 23, fifth phase on February 27, sixth phase on March 3 and seventh phase on March 7.


The counting of votes will take place on March 10.


In the 2017 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party had bagged 312 seats out of the 403. Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had bagged 47 seats and 19 seats respectively. Congress had managed to win only seven seats.
