New Delhi: Former President and veteran Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee is in a critical condition, doctors said here on Thursday.
The former President is admitted at the Indian Army's Research and Referral hospital in the national capital.
He had undergone an operation to remove a blood clot in his brain a couple of days ago and his health was reportedly in a fragile state after that.
He is also suferring from coronavirus.
"He is deeply comatose with stable vital parameters and continues to be on ventilatory support," the hospital said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, unconfirmed reports had claimed that the veteran Congress leader had breathed his last.
However, his son Abhijit Mukherjee took to social media to rubbish the claims.
"My Father Shri Pranab Mukherjee is still alive & haemodynamically stable ! Speculations & fake news being circulated by reputed Journalists on social media clearly reflects that Media in India has become a factory of Fake News," Abhijit Mukherjee posted on Twitter.
Pranab Mukherjee's daughter Sharmistha also took to social media to clear the air on the former President's health.
“Last year, August 8 was one of the happiest day for me as my dad received Bharat Ratna. Exactly a year later, on August 10, he fell critically ill. May God do whatever is best for him and give me strength to accept both joys and sorrows of life with equanimity. I sincerely thank all 4 their concerns,” Sharmistha Mukherjee wrote on Twitter.
"Rumours about my father is false. Request, esp'ly to media, NOT to call me as I need to keep my phone free for any updates from the hospital," she added.
Pranab Mukherjee had suffered an injury to his head during an accident in 2007. That injury has reportedly flared up yet again, compelling doctors to perform surgery to remove a blood clot.
The fact that he is suffering from coronavirus has reportedly complicated his health situation.
