Amit Kumar, New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the Kochi-Mangaluru gas pipeline to the nation today.
According to experts, this will prove to be an important milestone towards the creation of a national gas grid. PM Modi will inaugurate this pipeline through video conferencing at 11 am today. Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala, Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will be present along with Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the occasion.
The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement stating that this would be a significant achievement in the construction of 'one country, one gas grid'. GAIL (India) Limited has constructed this 450 km long pipeline. According to the PMO, it has a transport capacity of 1.20 lakh metric standard cubic meters per day and will carry natural gas from the liquidified natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal at Kochi (Kerala) to Mangaluru (Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka), while Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad , Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
The total cost of the project was around Rs 3,000 crore and its construction generated more than 12 lakh man-days of employment. Pipeline laying was an engineering challenge as the passage of the pipeline required crossing water bodies at over 100 locations. This was done through a special technique called horizontal directional drilling method.
The pipeline will supply eco-friendly and affordable fuel to households in the form of piped natural gas (PNG) and will provide compressed natural gas (CNG) to the transport sector. It will also supply natural gas to commercial and industrial units in the districts along with the pipeline. Clean fuel consumption will help in improving air quality by curbing air pollution.
