New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a program organized under the aegis of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on National Medical Day.

In the beginning of his address, PM Modi congratulated the doctors and expressed his gratitude for their cooperation in battling the coronavirus pandemic.

PM Modi's emphasis on strengthening health infrastructure

"You know very well the limitations of the kind of medical infrastructure that was created in the country over these decades. You are also familiar with how medical infrastructure was neglected in earlier times. This year the budget allocation for the health sector has been more than doubled i.e. more than two lakh crore rupees," PM Modi said.

"To strengthen the health infrastructure, we have come up with a credit guarantee scheme of Rs 50,000 crore, which will fill the shortage of health facilities," he added.

PM Modi seeks cooperation from IMA in Yoga mission

Referring to Yoga, PPM Modi sought cooperation from the IMA to take it forward in a scientific manner.

“Today, new AIIMS are being opened rapidly in the country, new medical colleges are being built, modern health infrastructure is being created. Till 2014, there were only 6 AIIMS in the country, while 15 new AIIMS were started in these 7 years and the number of medical colleges in the country has also increased by almost one and a half times," he said.

In his radio program 'Mann Ki Baat' on Sunday, PM Modi had appreciated the contribution of doctors. Tweeting his video today, he greeted the medical community and said that their contribution in making the planet healthy is commendable.

"On Doctors Day, my greetings to all doctors. India's strides in the world of medicine are commendable and have contributed to making our planet healthier," PM Modi posted on Twitter.

Right now the contribution being made by IMA in the crisis of Covid-19 epidemic is commendable. Not caring for his life, the doctors stood on the front lines in the second wave of Covid-19. So far 798 doctors of the country have lost their lives in this sequence.

According to the IMA, 128 doctors have died in Delhi during the second wave of the pandemic. After this, 115 doctors have died in Bihar and 79 in Uttar Pradesh. During the 'Mann Ki Baat' program on Sunday, PM Modi had appreciated the contribution of doctors in battling the epidemic. IMA President Dr JA Jayalal said that PM Modi has assured that doctors will be respected and protected.

Doctor's Day is celebrated in the memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Rai, former Chief Minister of West Bengal and a famous doctor.
