New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi got emotional today while paying homage to those who lost their lives due to Covid-19. He also gave a new slogan "Jahan bimar, wahin upchar (treatment of the ailing at their doorstep)"

"This virus has ... snatched many of loved ones from us. I pay my humble tribute to them and I express my condolences to the families who lost people," the Prime Minister said, in a voice choked with emotion.

The Prime Minister was interacting with doctors and frontline workers in Varanasi on a video conference. Modi won Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi in 2014 and and retained the seat in 2019.

"In the second wave of corona, we are fighting on multiple fronts at the same time. The rate of infection is also much more and patients are in hospital for a longer time."

"You have contained the virus significantly but there should be no complacency as it is going to be a long fight," he told the doctors and frontline workers. The Prime Minister also took stock of the functioning of various COVID hospitals in the holy city, including the Pandit Rajan Mishra COVID Hospital which was recently started through joint efforts of the DRDO and the Indian Army.

He also took the stock of ongoing efforts for tackling the second wave in Varanasi and preparations for the future. As the member of Parliament from Varanasi, PM Modi has been taking regular feedback from people.

PM also urged people to get vaccinated at the earliest and make it a collective responsibility. "We must get ourselves vaccinated when our turns comes and must make vaccination a collective responsibility. Our collective efforts will definitely give results," he said.

PM Modi's emotional tribute comes amid fierce criticism of his government over their handling of the pandemic.

In last few days, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has upped his ante and attacked the Central government. He has also criticised the Prime Minister for his massive election campaigns and held him accountable for the prevailing surge of novel coronavirus.
