New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired  review meeting with chief ministers of the states virtually amid the steep rise in daily number of coronavirus cases that has been feared as the second wave of covid-19 pandemic by the expert, with daily cases exceeding one lakh mark for the first time since the onset  of the pandemic.

The Prime Minister also added that people have shown severe laxity in maintaining covid appropriate behaviour. "Once again we need to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a mask and following COVID-19 safety protocols," he said.

In his address to the nation after his meet with Chief Ministers, the Prime Minister said that the recent surge in daily covid cases have created a challenging situation for the country and asked for everyone's suggestions to tackle the COVID19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister then said that last year the virus was new to us, therefore a lockdown was imposed to get the arrangements done such as manufacturing of masks, ventilators and ensuring ICU beds in every government and private hospitals. However, now it's been over one year into the pandemic and we have all the arrangements and infrastructure prepared and all we need to do is identify containment and micro-containment zones to break the chain of the virus.

The Prime Minister also added that people have shown severe laxity in maintaining covid appropriate behaviour. "Once again we need to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a mask and following COVID-19 safety protocols," he said.

Speaking about his meeting with CMs, he said, "We raised the issue of mortality rate, we have to make sure it remains sure it remains as low as possible. We should have comprehensive data about patients illness etc. This will help save their lives. "

"I appeal to you all to stress on COVID-19 testing. Our target is to do 70% RT-PCR tests. Let the number of positive cases come high, but do maximum testing. Proper sample collection is very important, it can be checked through proper governance."

"Today, the problem is that we have forgotten about COVID19 testing and have moved to vaccination. We have to remember that we had won the fight against COVID19 without a vaccine. We have to emphasise on testing," he said.

"We need to prioritise (vaccine distribution) with what we have. We won't get the result by keeping vaccines in one state. It is not right to think in this way. We have to manage by thinking about the country," PM Modi told states.
