New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana on Monday remarked in open court that the "PIL business" was taking up the Court's time and attention which could otherwise have been devoted to hearing "real matters."


The CJI made the observation during the mentioning of an environmental law case by senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat, Bar and Bench reported.


"This PIL business is stealing attention from real matters," CJI NV Ramana said.


According to a study by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, there are a total of 587 cases pending before Constitution Benches (benches with five or more judges) of the Supreme Court. Out of these, 35 cases are main matters, a decision in which will dispose of most of the connected matters as well.
