New Delhi: Petrol prices remained unchanged for the 33rd consecutive day on Thursday, August 19, 2021, in all four metro cities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. However, in a development, diesel price was reduced by 20 paise for the second straight day on Thursday.

In Delhi, petrol prices were steady at ₹ 101.84 per litre, whereas diesel rates were cut by 20 paise from ₹ 89.67 per litre to ₹ 89.47 per litre, according to Indian Oil Corporation. The petrol prices stood unchanged at ₹ 107.83 per litre in Mumbai, while the final diesel rates after revision were ₹ 97.04 per litre.

Chennai is the only metro city where petrol is retailed below 100 with one litre of petrol being sold at Rs 99.47 after the Tamil Nadu government announced a tax cut of Rs 3 on fuel prices. Meanwhile, one litre of diesel is being sold at Rs 94.02 in the city. In Kolkata, too, petrol prices remained to stagnate at 102. 08, while diesel is being sold at Rs. 92. 57 per litre.

Considering the crude oil prices in international markets and rupee-dollar exchange rates, State-run oil refiners such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum revise fuel rates on a daily basis. All the changes in fuel rates are applied at 6 am.

Fuel prices had been on the rise in the country since May 4 after the assembly elections in states and union territories including West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

In the month of July, the price of petrol was raised nine times, while diesel rates went up five times. Earlier in May-June, the prices of petrol and diesel had increased 16 times. Significantly, the round of increase in petrol and diesel prices had started since May 4. After this, the price of petrol in Delhi has gone up by Rs 11.44 and diesel by Rs 09.14 per litre.
