Petrol, diesel prices rise for 9th consecutive day

After today's hike, petrol prices in Delhi rose to Rs 89.54 (up by 25 paise) from Rs 89.29, while according to Indian Oil data, the price of diesel was Rs 79.95 per liter as against Rs 79.70 per liter on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Rising prices of petrol and diesel have increased the burden of inflation on the common man. On Wednesday (February 17), the price of petrol increased by 23-25 paise per liter and diesel by 24-26 paise per liter. 


Petrol has thus become costlier by Rs 2.61 and diesel by 3.16 rupees over a period of nine days.


After today's hike, petrol prices in Delhi rose to Rs 89.54 (up by 25 paise) from Rs 89.29, while according to Indian Oil data, the price of diesel was Rs 79.95 per liter as against Rs 79.70 per liter on Tuesday.

Fuel prices reviewed on a daily basis depend on Brent crude oil rates, as India imports about 85 percent of its fuel requirements. Central and state taxes make up 61 percent of the price of petrol and about 56 percent of diesel. The center charges Rs 32.9 per liter on petrol and Rs 31.80 per liter on diesel.


Last week, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan refused to make any cut in excise duty to give relief to the common man from rising retail prices.


Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Tuesday that petrol and diesel prices in the state would be cut by around Rs 7. Earlier, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the additional tax of Rs 5 per liter imposed on petrol and diesel during the epidemic in the state has been lifted.


Brent crude prices fell in the international oil market on Wednesday as the dollar jumped to offset the US energy crisis. International benchmark Brent crude oil futures closed at $ 62.95 per barrel, down 40 cents or 0.6 percent. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down 33 cents, or 0.6 percent, to $ 59.72 a barrel.
