Petrol and diesel prices have been rising steadily since May 4 after assembly elections in five states. In just 22 days, petrol has gone up by Rs 5.24 and diesel by Rs 5.17 per liter. According to the report, the price of petrol has been retailed at more than Rs 100 in 135 districts of the country. Petrol prices have risen by 13 per cent this year.

In Kolkata, petrol is retailed at Rs 95.52 and diesel at Rs 89.32 per liter. In Chennai, petrol one liter of petrol costs Rs 96.94 while diesel is available at Rs 91.15.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday blamed the recent surge in global crude oil prices for the fuel price hike in India.

"The prices of petroleum products have gone up. The main reason is that the price of crude oil has gone over USD 70 (per barrel) in the international market. This negatively impacts consumers here, as India imports 80 per cent of its oil requirement," he said.

When asked about his stand to include fuel in the GST regime as a measure to give respite to citizens from the price rise, Mr Pradhan said he agrees with the idea.
