Kolkata: The official function to celebrate Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's 125th birth anniversary took a rather political and controversial turn at the the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.

The birth anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter, named 'Parakram Divas' by the central government, was jointly attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

However, the event was marred by controversy when Mamata Banerjee walked off the stage alleging heckling from the crowd.

When Mamata Banerjee took the dais before her speech, slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram' started reverberating across the arena.

Hearing the slogans, Mamata Banerjee became enraged and refused to give a speech, saying that it is not right to call and insult someone.

"I think there should be some dignity of the government program. This is a government program, not a political party program, but a common people's program. I am thankful to the Prime Minister, I am thankful to the Cultural Ministry that you have made a program in Kolkata, but by inviting someone, inviting someone and insulting it does not suit you. I will not speak here to protesting against this. Jai Hind, Jai Bangla," Mamata Banerjee said.

A fuming Mamata Banerjee then left the stage.

Earlier on the day, Mamata Banerjee organized a 9 km long road show from Shyam Bazar to Red Road before joining the event held at Victoria Memorial.
