Indrajit, Mumbai: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is on a mission to free an Indian couple jailed in Qatar on charges of smuggling drugs.
The couple, who went to Qatar from India, was caught with over 4 kilograms of hashish and sentenced to 10 years in prison. But investigations by Indian agencies have revealed that the couple is innocent and the real culprits are drug smugglers.
According to NCB Deputy Director KPS Malhotra, on July 6, 2019, Indian national Mohammad Sharik Qureshi and his wife Oniba Kausar were caught from Doha's Hamad International Airport. A total of 4.1 kilograms of hashish was recovered from his bag.
A case was filed against him in the court and the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The court also imposed heavy fines on him.
On September 27, 2019, Oniba Kausar's father Shakeel Ahmad Qureshi said in a complaint to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) that his daughter and son-in-law were wrongfully detained in Qatar. He alleged that Shariq Qureshi's aunt Tabbusum Riyaz Qureshi and one of her companions Nizam Kara are behind this.
These people had sent them on the honeymoon package and had kept hashish in their bags without their knowledge, he claimed. Shakeel had handed over some documents and some audio clips to the NCB as evidence.
When the NCB started investigating the case, it was revealed that Nizam Kara and Tabsum were running a highly organized drugs syndicate in Mumbai.
On December 22, 2019, the Mumbai Police arrested Nizam Kara and Tabsum in the Nagpada area with 13 grams of cocaine. After this, the NCB arrested four persons of this syndicate - Vedram, Maheshwar, Shahnawaz Ghulam Choratwala and Miss Shabbana - in Chandigarh. One and a half kilograms of charas was seized from them.
Investigations revealed that the drug was sent by Nizam Kara and his wife Shaheeda Kara. On September 7, 2019, Nizam Kara got surety in the Mumbai case, after which on October 14 the NCB interrogated Nizam Kara and his wife under the NDPS Act.
During interrogation, both of them admitted that they had had put a package in the luggage of Mohammed Shariq Qureshi and his wife, but had told them that it contained a lot of tobacco.
The NCB has arrested Nizam Kara and his wife. The NCB is now trying to free the innocent couple. The Indian government is going through diplomatic channels in order to free the couple.
