New Delhi: Bollywood actor and former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member, Mithun Chakraborty, is most likely to share stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Brigade at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata tomorrow. The development comes amid speculations that the actor may join BJP ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Elections. It is still not clear whether he will campaign for the BJP in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, sources in the BJP say that Mithun Chakraborty is one of the many important faces whom the party will deploy against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"There are many Bengalis in the state and outside who are important people, concerned about Bengal's downward slide under Mamata Banerjee," said state BJP Vice-President Jay Prakash Majumdar "Mithun Chrakborty is one of them."
The actor left the Rajya Sabha two years ago after he got involved in the Sharda Chit Fund case. The actor was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate about the 1.2 crore he received for being the brand ambassador of a TV news channel funded by the group. He returned the money to the investigating agency and resigned citing ill-health from the upper house.
What he says about the Trinamool and Mamata Banerjee from Modi's platform tomorrow will be significant as it comes amid the high voltage Bengal assembly polls.
According to sources, some more important renowned faces from Bengal are set to join the BJP in the coming weeks. The state elections will be held in eight phases from 27 March to 29 April, the results of which will be announced on 2 May.
