New Delhi, News24 Bureau, Dec 8: BSP Chief Mayawati has welcomed reservation for economically weaker sections of upper castes. The BSP supremo said this in as many words, "The BSP welcomes reservation for economically weaker sections of upper castes." But then she went on to add that this decision should have been taken a bit earlier so that the government had enough time to implement this in letter and spirit. According to her, this appeared motivated and the decision is taken with an eye on the forthcoming elections.
10 percent reservation has been approved by Union Cabinet for economically weaker upper caste sections. Reservation has been approved in government jobs and education also. Modi government will take the next move of amending the constitution to grant the benefit of 10 per cent reservation for the economically weaker upper caste people.The Union Cabinet Monday approved a 10 per cent reservation for 'economically backward' upper castes in government jobs.Ahead of the General Elections this year, the government has announced reservation in jobs for those belonging to the upper castes and earning less than Rs 8 lakh per year, sources said.A bill to amend Article 15 and 16 of the constitution will be moved in Parliament to this effect. The Supreme Court has capped the quota for caste-based reservation for government jobs at 50 per cent. After this, there will be a reservation for the economically weaker upper caste.In simple words this can be explained thus: The economically weaker section of the society, even if they belong to the Upper castes will be considered for reservation in the government jobs. This wasn't the case earlier and reservation in government jobs was just for the SC-ST and the backwards.But then as had been pointed out by the senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari: Where are the jobs?
