New Delhi: Maharashtra on Wednesday logged in 59,907 new Covid-19 infections, its highest single-day spike, taking its total tally to 3,173,261. With 322 new fatalities, the death toll also reached past 56,652.
The number of active cases also crossed the 500,000-mark with 501,559 active infections in the state.
Mumbai, one of the worst hit cities of the state, reported 10,442 cases while 24 more people suffered virus related casualties, taking the tally to 483,042 and toll to 11,856. Mumbai also has 83,185 active cases. Pune has the highest number of cases in the city at 90,048. The city reported 5,637 new cases on Wednesday.
As the number of cases surge high in the state, the government has intensified vaccination drive. And as a result, many vaccination centres in the state are running short of vaccine doses. Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pendekar said that many vaccination centre in the city will have no vaccine doses to administer in three days.

Health Minister Rajesh Thope wrote to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Singh, seeking more vaccine doses. In his letter, he also reiterated CM Uddhav Thackeray's request as he urged the Union Minister to make vaccination available of all adults.
The state may face scarcity of beds due to steep rise in daily number of cases. According to data from the state health department on Wednesday, 80.51% of isolation beds for Covid-19 patients across the state are occupied. It also stated that 32.77% oxygen beds and 60.94% ICU beds are also occupied across the state.
