New Delhi: Strained relations between China and India have been going on for more than a year. Amidst the standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between the Indian Army and the People's Liberation Army (PLA), some fighter jets of China were seen practicing in areas opposite eastern Ladakh on Tuesday.

According to the Indian Army, their number will be close to two dozen. There have been several rounds of talks between India and China, but so far the ongoing military tension between the two countries has not decreased. Now this major exercise of the PLA Air Force (PLAAF) of China is expected to increase tensions.

According to defence sources, around 21-22 Chinese fighter jets - predominantly J-11 which is a Chinese copy of Su-27 fighter jet and some J-16 fighter jets - were practicing on the Chinese side of the LAC in eastern Ladakh.

These fighter jets of China are based in PLA Air Force (PLAAF) airbases in Hotan, Gar Gunsa and Kashgar. All these were recently upgraded so that all types of fighter jets can be supported from here.

According to sources, all these Chinese aircraft remained within their own territory during the exercise.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) also regularly patrols the regions near the LAC with its Rafale fighter jets. Sources said that although China has withdrawn its forces from the Pangong Lake area, it has not removed its air defense systems, which include HQ-9 and HQ-16. Both of these systems have the ability to hit long range targets.

India keeps a close watch on China's PLA Air Force (PLAAF) and its Hotan, Gurgunsa, Kashghar, Hopping, Konka Jong, Linzhi and Pangut airbases.
