Kushinagar Tragedy: Victims' families to get Rs 4 lakh compensation each

The death toll in Wednesday night's accident in Naurangia Tola village of Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh has risen to 13. The district administration has announced financial assistance of Rs. 4 lakh each to the dependents who died in this accident and also arranged free treatment of the injured.

Kushinagar: The death toll in Wednesday night's accident in Naurangia Tola village of Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh has risen to 13. The district administration has announced financial assistance of Rs. 4 lakh each to the dependents who died in this accident and also arranged free treatment of the injured.


Meanwhile, SDRF teams are still searching for bodies in the well.


Kushinagar District Magistrate S Rajalingam said that children and women were sitting on the old well covered with a slab in Naurangia Tola village of Kushinagar on Wednesday night during a pre-marriage ritual. During this time, the slab collapsed and those sitting on it fell into the well. In this incident, 13 people have died and three are in critical condition. 


Financial assistance of 4 lakh rupees will be given to the family members of each deceased. The district administration will also provide Rs 50,000 each to the injured. 


Along with President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have expressed their condolences over the accident.


ADG Gorakhpur Zone Akhil Kumar is also camping in Kushinagar. He informed that relief work is going on on the spot. SDRF teams are conducting a search operation in the well. Among the dead are boys and girls along with women. At the time of the incident, all the people in a family were watching the dance going on in the celebration of turmeric ritual. 


Police of several police stations conducted rescue operation and took out the injured and dead bodies. The well being reported had water up to two-and-a-half feet. The accident became serious due to one falling on top of the other.


The son of Parameshwar Kushwaha, a resident of Tola in Naurangia, is getting married on Thursday. In the course of the marriage ceremony, the women went to the well located in the village to perform matkod while performing the rite of turmeric. The children also went with them. After this they stood on the slab made on the well and started watching the dance. 


Meanwhile, the slab broke and fell into the well, as a result of which the women including the child on board fell into the well and got buried. As soon as the information of the incident was received, a commotion broke out. Everyone ran towards the scene. Police rescued everyone with the help of villagers. It took an hour and a half and by then it was too late. The 11 injured were brought to the district hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Meanwhile, two children admitted in Kotwa CHC also died.
