General Narwane has taken over as the Chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee (COSC) to ensure coordination between the Indian Army, the IAF and the Indian Navy.
Prior to the creation of the post of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), the most senior of the three service heads was the chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee (COSC).
India's first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat died along with his wife and 11 armed forces personnel when a Mi-17 V5 helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed on December 8 at Coonoor in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.
General Narwane has been given charge as the chairman of the committee, as he is the most senior of the three army chiefs. Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary and Indian Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar have assumed their respective posts on September 30 and November 30, respectively.
The Chief of Staff Committee (COSC) held a meeting on Tuesday and expressed grief over the death of CDS General Bipin Rawat and others killed in the Coonoor helicopter crash. Group Captain Varun Singh, who survived the accident, died at a military hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

The helicopter crashed while General Rawat was on his way to give a lecture at the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington, Tamil Nadu.
