This project is different from the Arihant category project. Under this project, six nuclear powered submarines with the capability to launch ballistic missiles are being built. Official sources said the nuclear attack submarine project will add to the indigenous submarine capability as 95 per cent of it will be built in India. The project will give a major boost to the domestic defense sector, including both the private and public sectors.
Sources said the planners are confident that they will complete the project to build six nuclear submarines without any outside help. If necessary, they can take the help of one of the strategic partner countries. Sources say that the project will also be of great help to the economy as it is expected to generate a large number of jobs in the defense sector.
The Indian Navy and DRDO will get approval for the construction of the first three of these submarines. They will have the option of building three more boats after the completion of this project. The Indian Navy's proposal to have six indigenous nuclear attack submarines was one of the few major defense modernization proposals.
This proposal was approved by the Narendra Modi government soon after coming to power in 2014. Even though there have been some delays, India is still making great strides in the area of indigenous submarine building capability.
