Puducherry: Voting is being held in the Union Territory of Puducherry today for the Puducherry Election 2021. Like in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, all the 30 assembly seats are going to the polls in one phase.
A total of 323 candidates are in the fray for the 30 seats in the Puducherry Election 2021. The politics of Puducherry is also quite interesting. The reason for this is that the Congress is no longer in power there. The BJP is keen to form a government in this small Union Territory with the help of Congress rebels.
In the last election, Congress had contested 21 seats and won 15. The All India NR Congress had contested 30 seats and won only eight. Seven seats went to other contestants. Here 16 seats are needed to attain a majority.
Latest status of Puducherry
There are a total of 30 seats in the Vidhan Sabha of Puducherry. Recently, a big political incident was witnessed here. Chief Minister Narayanasamy lost the trust vote in the House and had to resign before voting on the motion of confidence and the Congress government collapsed.
Recently, due to the resignation of several Congress MLAs and one MLA from outside supporting DMK, the Union Territory government was reduced to a minority.
Political mathematics of Puducherry
In an effort to bring Puducherry back to power once again with the Congress DMK, the BJP has aligned with other smaller parties including the All India NR Congress and the AIADMK. In such a situation, the political contest of Puducherry has become quite interesting.
The N Rangasamy-led AINRC is contesting on 16 seats, while the BJP on 9 and AIDMK candidates on 5 of the remaining 14 seats are in the fray. Similarly, Congress is contesting 14 seats and supporting an Independent in Yanam seat while its allies including DMK and others are contesting from 13 seats. Here, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan and his party are also trying their luck.
