Nashik: As many as 22 people died in Nashik after an oxygen tank leaked at Zakir Hussain Hospital on Wednesday. The hospital was occupied with at least 171 patients at the time of the incident.
"The oxygen supply was stopped for half an hour due to the leak, because of which those on the ventilator lost their lives," said Kailash Jadhav, Commissioner, Nasik Municipal Corporation.
"People died because the pressure reduced due to the [leak in] the oxygen tank which is provided by a private company. That company looks after the maintenance of this tank," Nashik Collector Suraj Mandhare said.
"This is an unfortunate incident. I spoke to Nashik municipal commissioner who has informed me that the situation is under control now. I'll be going to Nashik soon. Nashik Guardian Min Chhagan Bhujbal has already gone there," said Maharashtra minister Rajesh Tope.
Union Minister Amit Shah extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and tweeted: "I am distressed to hear the news of oxygen leak at a hospital in Nashik. I express my deepest condolences on this irreparable loss of those who have lost their loved ones in this incident. I pray to God for the efficiency of all the other patients."
Calling a detailed inquiry into the matter, former Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said, What happened in Nashik is terrible. It's being said that 11 people died which is very disturbing. I demand that the other patients be helped and shifted if needed. We demand a detailed inquiry
