India foiled terrorists’ main motive: Govt on Pathankot attack

New Delhi: While briefing media of the latest update on Pathankot terror attack, Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi today said that the true motive of terrorists were foiled by the security forces, who acted instantaneously upon the active intelligence inputs.

“Due to active intelligence inputs, advance information, and security forces, especially the Air Force, we have been able to ensure that there have been no damage to IAF assets,” he said here.

Mehrishi said that the early actions forced the terrorists to run away from their likely intended target and hide in the thick growth of trees and shrubs, away from the air force base, where they were contained by the security forces in a combing operation.

All started when an Innova car was found along with driver whose throat was slit on January 1. The incident was acted upon and “an alert was sounded and all vital installations were alerted to a terror attack ahead of the pre-dawn attack on Saturday.”

Four terrorists, who attacked the IAF base, were neutralised on Saturday. However, there was uncertainty over more terrorists involved. “When combing started in morning, we did found at least two more terrorists,” he said adding that they will also be counteracted by evening.

According to him, the terrorists killed six IAF personnel and injured eight others. An NSG officer was killed on Sunday morning and five of his colleagues were injured.

Meanwhile, Air Marshal Anil Khosla, Director General Air Operations at Air Headquarters, said that the operation is still ongoing and at the moment, is “at a mature state but confirmation on the number of casualties only after recovering bodies.”
