New Delhi: India has recorded 16,946 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 1,05,12,093. With 198 more people dying due to the virus, the overall death toll in the country has reached to 1,51,727, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
India had recorded 12,584 new cases on Tuesday, the lowest single-day figure in over seven months. Before this, the lowest number was recorded on June 18, 2020, when India reported 12,881 new cases. As per the Ministry data, 1,01,46,763 people have recovered till now and currently there are 2,13,603 active cases. The recovery rate stands at 96.51 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.44 as per cent.
The total number of samples tested for covid-19 infection up to January 13 were 18,42,32,305, including 7,43,191 tested on Wednesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research said.
India's much awaited nationwide vaccination will begin on Saturday, with the approval of two vaccines. Vials of Covaxin, India's first vaccine against coronavirus, reached Bengaluru on Wednesday with a total of 20,000 doses.
Earlier, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has said: "After one dose, or even after two doses, Covid-appropriate behaviour has to be followed. I am requesting you with folded hands. Please don't think I have got one dose or two doses... now nothing can happen to me."
In the first phase, India plans to vaccinate approximately 30 crore people including Health care workers, frontline workers, police and army personnel, people aged above 60 and those with comorbidities.
Meanwhile, the overall global coronavirus caseload has topped 92 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.97 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
