New Delhi: India reported a slight drop in daily coronavirus cases compared to Monday's 1 lakh as it logged in 96,982 new infections on Tuesday. The new addition took the country's tally past 1.26 crore, date from the Union Health Ministry showed. On Monday, the country recorded 1,03,558 new coronavirus cases, the highest single-day tally since the coronavirus outbreak.
In the last 24-hour, 446 more people died due to the virus, pushing the fatality toll to 1,65,547.
Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab have shown a steep rise in the daily new cases.
Maharashtra, the worst-hit state in the country, reported 47,288 new coronavirus cases, pushing the total count in the state to over 3.23 lakh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a meeting to discuss the covid situation in the country with health authorities. Along with asking people to maintain covid appropriate behaviours, Centre also rushed 50 high-level-multi-disciplinary teams to 50 districts across Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Punjab in view of the recent very large numbers of daily new Covid-19 cases. PM Modi asked health officials to focus on bringing down the mortality rate and asked people for their active participation in combating the current situation.
A total of 25,02,31,269 samples tested for Covid up to April 5. Of these, 12,11,612 samples were tested on Monday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research.
India started its covid-19 vaccination drive on January 16 with two approved vaccine - Covaxin and Covishield. In the first phase, health care and frontline workers received the vaccine shots, while the second phase saw people above 60 and those below 45 with comorbidities being inoculated. For the third phase, the country is vaccinating people above 45 of age irrespective of comorbidities.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow people above 25 to receive vaccine shots. He said the move will protect young people from the rapid spread of coronavirus at a time when it has become necessary to step outside the home to earn a livelihood.
So far, 8.31 crore doses of corona vaccine have been administered in the country since the drive began on January 16 after approval for 'Covishield' and 'Covaxin'.
