New Delhi, Aug 24: Former Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitely passed away at AIIMS on Saturday after prolonged illness. Jaitley had undergone dialysis on Thursday.

"It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Member of Parliament (MP) at 12:07 p.m. on Saturday. Jaitley was admitted in AIIMS, New Delhi on August 9 and was treated by a multi-disciplinary team of senior doctors," said Aarti Vij, Chairperson, Media and Protocol, AIIMS.

-Home Minister Amit Shah reaches Arun Jaitley's residence to pay homage.

Arun Jaitley's demise is an unbearable loss to the workers of BJP. As a student leader, he was jailed for 19 months during the emergency. As a Member of Parliament, he always raised the voice of the people and acted as a crusader against corruption, said Home Minister Amit Shah;

Whenever I faced trouble in my life, #ArunJaitley ji stood by me. Today he is not with us anymore, I pray to the almighty to give peace to the departed soul and give strength to his family and BJP workers, to cope with this loss, said Home Minister Amit Shah.

-Country has lost an outstanding parliamentarian: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh 

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condoled the death of former Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley saying that he was a great orator and an outstanding parliamentarian. The country has lost a great leader who always worked for the betterment of society, Singh said.

In his condolence letter to Jaitley's wife, Sangeeta Jaitley, Manmohan Singh said, "I have learnt with profound sorrow about the sad and shocking news of the untimely demise of our beloved Arun Jaitley."

"He was an eminent lawyer, an excellent orator, a very good administrator and an outstanding parliamentarian. In his death the country has lost a great leader who always worked for the betterment of society," he said.

The former Prime Minister said that "I take this opportunity to convey to you and other members of your family my heartfelt condolences on this bereavement".

"We pray to Almighty to give all of you the strength to bear this great loss with courage and fortitude," he added.

Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi condoled the death of former Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley saying his contribution to public life will forever be remembered.

In a statement, Sonia Gandhi expressed deep pain and distress at the untimely passing away of Jaitley.

Condoling his death Sonia Gandhi said, "Jaitley had a long innings as a public figure, Parliamentarian and Minister and his contributions to public life will forever be remembered."


-Leaders across party lines condole Jaitley's death 

-Manipur Governor Najma Heptullah fondly remembered him not only as a former cabinet colleague but also as a legal luminary, "He could speak very well not only on the floor of the House but also inside the court room". She remembered the humour that Jaitley would inject into his parliamentary speeches.

-Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remembered how Jaitley was appreciated across the treasury and opposition benches, "He always had a deep and clear understanding of the issues of the day. His knowledge and articulation won him several friends".

-Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Jaitley credited merit to his personal equation. Remembering his dedication, Shivraj Singh said, "When he would sit at the Central Election Committee meetings of BJP, it would go till late at night. Even till his last breath, he continued to tweet.

-Assam leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is often referred to as the BJP's Amit Shah of the east, called Jaitley 'One of modern India's tallest architects, an accomplished lawyer, outstanding parliamentarian, great administrator'.

-West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who shared a very close relationship with the former Finance Minister, took to Twitter to say: "Extremely saddened at the passing away of Arun Jaitley Ji, after a battle bravely borne. An outstanding parliamentarian and a brilliant lawyer, appreciated across parties. His contribution to Indian polity will be remembered. My condolences to his wife, children, friends and admirers."

-The Congress from it's official handle tweeted: "We are deeply saddened to hear the passing of Shri Arun Jaitley. Our condolences to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of grief".

-Senior Congress leader and friend from the legal fraternity Kapil Sibal tweeted, "Very sorry to learn that Arun Jaitley is no more. An old friend and a dear colleague will be remembered for his seminal contributions to the polity and as Finance Minister of India. As Leader of Opposition he was without match. He always stood steadfastly for his friends and for his party."


-Jaitley had great intellect, knowledge: Former President Pranab Mukherjee

Former President Pranab Mukherjee condoled the death of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, saying that he was a leader with deep intellect and knowledge.

The former President said he had visited Jaitley at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday and prayed for his speedy recovery.

"Deeply saddened at the untimely passing away of Arun Jaitley. Visited him just day before and prayed for his speedy recovery. He was a leader with deep intellect and knowledge, and a voice of reason. He will be dearly missed. My prayers with his family, friends and admirers," Mukherjee tweeted.


-Jaitley made India world's fastest growing economy: Amit ShahUnion Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday condoled the death of former Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley describing it as a personal loss for him and recalled his contribution during Narendra Modi's first term (2014-19) in making India the world's fastest growing economy.In a series of tweets, Shah said, "I am deeply saddened by the death of Arun Jaitley. Jaitley's departure is a personal loss for me. I have lost not only a senior leader of the organization but also an integral member of the family whose support and guidance I have been receiving for years."

"He (Jaitley) made an indelible mark as the Finance Minister of the country during the Modi government's 2014-19 tenure and brought on ground Modiji's poor welfare vision and propelled India as the world's fastest growing economy.

"Be it the matter of taking action on black money, the matter of realizing the dream of 'GST', the matter of demonetisation or the relief of the common man, in every decision of his, the welfare of the country and the people of the country was visible. The country will always remember him for his very simple and sensitive personality," he said in another tweet.

"I pray to God to grant peace to the departed soul and give the bereaved family the power to bear this disconnection. Om shanti shanti shanti," he added.


-Jaitley to be cremated on Sunday

Arun Jaitley will be cremated at the Nigam Bodh Ghat here on Sunday, party sources said. 

"Jaitley's body will reach the BJP office at 10 a.m. on Sunday and thereafter cremation will take place at the Nigam Bodh Ghat at 2 p.m.," a party official said. 

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart's body will be taken to his residence in Kailash Colony from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) later in the day.


-Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed his condolences over the demise of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, saying that he has lost a valued friend and that the BJP and Jaitley shared an unbreakable bond.

Modi said in a series of tweets: "BJP and Arun Jaitley Ji had an unbreakable bond. As a fiery student leader, he was at forefront of protecting our democracy during the Emergency. He became a much liked face of our Party, who could articulate the Party programmes and ideology to a wide spectrum of society."

Modi also said that he has lost a valueable friend n Jaitley. "With the demise of Arun Jaitley Ji, I have lost a valued friend, whom I have had the honour of knowing for decades. His insight on issues and nuanced understanding of matters had very few parallels. He lived well, leaving us all with innumerable happy memories. We will miss him!"

In another tweet, the Prime Minister said: "Arun Jaitley Ji was a political giant, towering intellectual and legal luminary. He was an articulate leader who made a lasting contribution to India. His passing away is very saddening. Spoke to his wife Sangeeta Ji as well as son Rohan, and expressed condolences. Om Shanti."

"Full of life, blessed with wit, a great sense of humour and charisma, Arun Jaitley Ji was admired by people across all sections of society. He was multi-faceted, having impeccable knowledge about India's Constitution, history, public policy, governance and administration," he said. 


- President Ram Nath Kovind expressed condolences on the demise of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, saying that his death leaves a huge void in the intellectual ecosystem.

"Extremely saddened by the passing of Shri Arun Jaitley after battling a long illness with fortitude and dignity. A brilliant lawyer, a seasoned parliamentarian, and a distinguished minister, he contributed immensely to nation building," he tweeted. 


- Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu expressed condolences on the death of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and said that his death is an irreparable loss to the nation.

"I am deeply shocked to learn about the demise of Shri Arun Jaitley, a long time dear friend and one of my closest associates. His death is an irreparable loss to the nation and a personal loss to me. I have no words to express my grief," Naidu tweeted.  


-Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana have expressed their grief over the demise of former Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitely.

"Sad to hear that former Union Minister Arun Jaitley ji has passed away. My thoughts are with his family in this time of grief. May his soul rest in peace," Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted. 


- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia mourned the death of former Union Minister Arun Jaitley, saying his death is a huge loss and he will be missed.

"Untimely demise of former Finance Minister and senior leader Jaitley is a huge loss to the nation. A legal luminary and an experienced political leader known for his governance skills will be missed by the country. Thoughts and prayers with his family in this moment of grief," Kejriwal tweeted.


Sisodia said he is extremely shocked to hear about the passing away of Jaitley.

"I had known him for many years and always found him to be knowledgeable and sincere. Will miss him," he tweeted.
