New Delhi, October 18: Former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari died on Thursday -- on his 93rd birthday -- in the national capital at a private hospital following prolonged illness, doctors said.Suffering from renal and old-age problems, the former Union Minister passed away at 3 p.m. at Max Hospital in Saket. He is survived by his wife Ujjwala and son Rohit Shekhar.

A long career
Narayan Dutt Tiwari who passed away on Thursday on his 93rd birthday won his first election from Nainital in 1952 on a Praja Samajwadi Party ticket. After a decade, he joined the Congress and served for the party for most of his life.
Controversies that dogged him
Tiwari was a three-time chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and also became the only Uttarakhand CM to complete a full term. Tiwari also held key portfolios at the centre.
In spite of such achievements he will be also remembered for a couple of controversies that dogged him in the later years of his life, one was Andhra Pradesh Raj Bhavan sex scandal and the paternity suit a love child filed against him.
In the 1990s when he floated his own party All India Indira Congress with Arjun Singh.
And last year, Tiwari openly announced his support for the BJP ahead of the assembly elections in Uttarakhand.
Entry to politics
Tiwari began his career before Independence. At the age of 15, he was jailed in Nainital prison for writing anti-British pamphlets, where his freedom fighter father too was lodged.
After his release, Tiwari joined Allahabad University and become the president of its student union in 1947.
CM of Uttar Pradesh
In 1976, he was sworn as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time. Two more stints followed in the 1980s.
At the Centre, Tiwari was appointed as deputy chairperson of the Planning Commission. He also held portfolios in the Union Cabinet like finance, petroleum, planning and external affairs.
Running for PM
There were also speculations that he was in the running in for PM position in 1991 when the party eventually picked P V Narasimha Rao.
In the same year, he lost his Nainital seat by just 800 votes.
Role in the shaping of Uttarakhand
Tiwari served as the third chief minister of the newly formed Uttarakhand state but he was the first CM to complete a full term, from 2002 to 2007 and he continues to hold the record who has done so.
Tiwari is credited with helping the infant state and got Uttarakhand an industrial package from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government at the Centre, which played an important role in state's early development. He then wooed industrialists.
In 2007, he accepted the governorship of Andhra Pradesh but Andhra Pradesh Raj Bhavan sex scandal (two years later a video clip showing three women in bed with an elderly man in Raj Bhavan) forced him to end his political career.
Citing 'health grounds', he ended his career and shifted to Dehradun. In 2008, Rohit Shekhar filed a paternity suit claiming that Tiwari was his biological father.
In 2012, the court-ordered DNA test which proved the claim right.
After Rohit Shekhar was proven right, Tiwari married Shekhar's mother Ujjwala Sharma in 2014 at Lucknow, finding a new family in the mother and son at the age of 88.
