New Delhi, Dec 17: A 34-year-old traffic police constable was left battling for life after a speeding car hit him on Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj early on Saturday. The driver, who was allegedly drunk, crashed into two barriers before hitting the constable.
Additional DCP (southwest) Gaurav Sharma said that the accident occurred at 3 am on Saturday and constable Bhoop Singh suffered severe injuries. The errant driver has been identified as Akhilesh Lohia, a resident of South Extension. He has been arrested under sections of dangerous driving, causing grievous hurt and drunk driving.
Police officers said that Singh was deployed at the police picket on Nelson Mandela Marg along with two other policemen on Friday night. He was armed and the team was deployed as the road is desolate at night.
The picket team had set up two barriers to slow vehicles down and an iron shield. As per the preliminary probe, Lohia, who had come to Vasant Vihar to attend a wedding, was reportedly driving at high speed and hit the first barrier, knocking it off the road. The car then hit the second barrier as well.
Police sources said that Singh was stationed behind the second barrier and was crushed under Lohia's car. The car finally stopped when it hit the iron shield.
Singh was taken to a private hospital nearby by his colleagues and is currently in the ICU. Medical reports suggest he has suffered severe head injuries and remains critical.
Lohia was also taken to hospital where his medical report indicated blood alcohol levels above the permissible limits. He told cops that he was on his way to Chhatarpur farms. Police sources said that he owns a polybag manufacturing business.
