Congress candidate attacked in Odisha, in critical condition

Bhubaneswar, May 22: Congress candidate Manoj Kumar Jena was attacked by unidentified assailants in Berhampur town in Ganjam district of Odisha on Wednesday evening.

According to media reports, Jena and one of his associates Anil Kumar Swain was shot at by six unidentified assailants who also attacked him with sharp edged weapons.

The incident reportedly took place at Oxford School Chhak near Lanjipalli area of Berhampur.

Jena, who had contested the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections from Aska Assembly seat, was admitted in a hospital at Berhampur along with Swain.

Since his condition continued to remain critical, Jena was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

According to the police, Jena and Swain were returning from Bhubaneswar in a four-wheeler when they came under attack by the assailants, who came on two bikes.

The attackers reportedly injured a boy when one of their bikes crashed into during their escape bid. A gun and one of the bikes used by the assailants have been recovered from the spot.

“Jena was coming from Bhubaneswar in an SUV when he stopped at the bypass to attend nature’s call. The miscreants who seemed to be following him opened fire at him. Treatment of Jena is our first priority,” Berhampur SP Pinka Mishra was quoted as saying by Kalingatv.
