Despite campaigning by PM Modi and Amit Shah, Beed strongwoman and minister Pankaja Munde has lost in Parli to none other than her estranged cousin and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde
New Delhi, Oct 24: Despite campaigning by PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Beed strongwoman and minister Pankaja Munde has lost in Parli to none other than her estranged cousin and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde.
This comes as a huge shock for the Bharatiya Janata Party as big leaders had campaigned for strong leader Gopinath Munde's daughter. Pankaja literally broke down in tears while talking to the media.
BJP leader and Maharashtra cabinet minister Pankaja Munde on Thursday accepted her defeat from Parli assembly seat at the hands of her cousin and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde. The result of the Parli seat has not been declared yet, but Pankaja was trailing behind Dhananjay Munde by almost 87,000 votes. "I worked for the constituency. Though I was in the government, my struggle for my constituency and people continued. I take responsibility of this defeat," she said.
Pankaja Munde is the sitting BJP legislator from Parli Assembly constituency. She is the daughter of late BJP heavyweight Gopinath Munde.
Pankaja is the daughter of the late Union Minister Gopinath Munde and sister of sitting Beed MP Pritam Munde and had contested from the family stronghold of Beed in Marathwada.
Conceding her stunning defeat even before the official declaration of the result, a weeping Munde declared before media persons that she "respected the people's verdict" and assured to continue working for them with renewed vigour.
She also appealed to her party activists and supporters to maintain calm and promised to do soul-searching on her debacle.
