New Delhi, May 15: An American track and field athlete has caused an internet sensation with a heroic - and rather dangerous - dive to win the men's 400 metre event an athletics meeting in Arkansas.
Infinite Tucker was leading teammate Robert Grant by an extremely thin margin around five metres from the finish line when he decided to make a superman like jump and land in an almost horizontal position across the line.
That incredible effort saw Tucker finish at the top of the podium with a time of 49.38 seconds. Grant was second with 49.47.
The youngster from Huntingdon, New York later said that he was thinking of his mother when he decided on the rather unsual move.
"Look, I closed my eyes over hurdle 10. I opened it, saw my mother at the finish and I jumped to give her a hug. That's all it is," Tucker told BBC after the race.
The 20-year-old athlete asserted that he wanted to make his mother proud.
“I wanted to make her proud by wining the race, so going over the last hurdle, I was just thinking about her and giving it my all,” Tucker was quoted as saying by Runner’s World.
“Her raising three kids on her own at a young age and supporting us, going job to job and working overtime to put food on the table and clothes on our back. I promised her that all of her pain and suffering would be appreciated,” he added.
The jump left him with scratches and bruises on his knees and thighs and he is yet to recover fully. His coach Pat Henry does not want a repeat in future.
“He told me I definitely didn’t need to dive because I had the race. My mom said the same thing when I called her after the race. I didn’t need to jump, but she appreciated the effort, and the day after was Mother’s Day, so she was really excited,” Tucker said.
“I think I’m just going to sprint across the line from now on. It really took a toll.”
