Srinagar: Six days after an avalanche hit an army post in Siachen glacier, an army jawan, who was buried under 25 feet of snow, was found alive on Monday.
"It was a miraculous rescue, all efforts are being made to evacuate Lance Naik Hanaman Thappa to the RR hospital in the morning,” said Northern Army commander Lt Gen DS Hooda.
“Five bodies have been recovered so far and four bodies have been identified. All other soldiers are regrettably no more with us,” he told PTI.
The Army said that the rescue operation to locate the bodies of remaining soldiers would continue.
Army teams have been sifting though of huge masses of ice in temperatures between minus 42 and minus 25 degrees Celsius in the avalanche-struck region of the glacier, digging more than 30 feet at times to locate the missing soldiers.
