Mumbai: There is good news for all those who wanted to see her fit and walking. The world’s heaviest woman has lost half her weight in two months, and now she can fit in a wheel chair. All this has been made possible by Indian doctors.
When the 36-year old Egyptian Emam Ahmed landed in Mumbai on February 11on a special plane, she weighed 500 kgs, and in about two months she is down to 250 kg. She had undergone a successful bariatric surgery (stomach-shrinking bypass procedure carried out on those wanting to lose excessive weight) at Saifee Hospital here on March 7.
When she came to India, it was after many-many years that she had stepped out of her home, where she was confined to bed. Now, her doctors have uploaded videos of a “happier and slimmer” Emam. In videos (shot onApril 18), she can be seen smiling and sitting on bed listening to music.
“She looks a happier and slimmer version of her past self. She can finally fit into a wheelchair and sit for a longer period of time, something we never dreamt of three months back,” said a statement from doctors. The diet brought down her weight by 100 kgs in a month.
Doctors say that she is more alert now. However, doctors are more concerned now about her neurological problems, including fits which may be occurring because of the stroke she suffered three years ago. She is partially paralysed, and unable to speak properly. “She continues to lose weight rapidly and is awaiting the moment she can fit into a CT scan machine to know the cause of her right-sided paralysis and convulsions,” her doctors said.
As a child, Emam was diagnosed with elephantiasis, a condition that causes the limbs and other body parts to swell. This had made her immobile, which in turn resulted in serious ailments like diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep deprivation. She also suffered several strokes because of the various complications.
