2 lives were saved by the kidneys of a dying girl, 1st case of its kind

New Delhi: It comes across as an inspiring story when even in one's death, one gives reason to smile by saving two precious lives. And this exactly what happened when th suicide of a 19-year-old city girl saves two lives. The two patients were suffering from renal disorder.

One Shankuntala, sadly put an end to her life after having an argument with her parents. She consumed poison and was rushed to the Safdarjung hospital. But by that time her condition was very serious. But her suicide gave a new lease of life to two patients.  Dr Anup Kumar, professor and head, department of urology and renal transplantation at Safdarjung hospital, said that this is perhaps the first time when where organs have been harvested from a patient in spite of poisoning and cardiac death. A resident of Chattarpur, South Delhi Shakuntala took the extreme step of suicide after a minor altercation with her parents. She consumed insecticide which was there at home.

One recipient was on dialysis for three years. She was a 39-year-old woman and would not have lived for more than two years had she not got Shakuntala's kidney. The other kidney was for a patient in Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.
