10-year jail for drunken driving, new rule

New Delhi: Now, don’t even think about driving if you are drunk. You may land up in jail for 10 years for doing it. The government has decided to come down on drunken driving with a heavy hand.

In an effort to curb drunken driving the Cabinet has approved changes in the Motor Vehicles Act to introduce stricter penalties for those who drink and drive. If a drunken driver kills a person while driving he will face a jail term of 10 years. While penalty for drunken driving has been raised to Rs 10000  

The compensation for accident victims has been raised from Rs 50,000 to Rs10 lakh. In case of injury the compensation will be  Rs 5 lakh, instead of just Rs 25,000 earlier.
