New Delhi, News24 Bureau, Oct 16: "Allahabad to be called Prayagraj from today, "announced Uttar Pradesh Minister Siddharth Nath Singh in Lucknow on Tuesday. As the historic city of Allahabad is renamed Prayagraj, here are the 10 points about the city which has been rechristened several times.1. Yogi Adityanath had announced on Saturday that there is a proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj ahead of the 2019 Kumbh Mela. “The honourable governor has already given his approval and if there is a consensus, I think the name will be changed soon,” he had said.2. “Prayag is where Lord Brahma performed the first yagna. The confluence of two rivers is a 'Prayag', and in Allahabad three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati meet. Hence, it is the king of 'prayags'. That is why it is 'Prayagraj',” the chief minister said explaining the root of the name.3. “Raja Harshvardhan made ‘Prayag Kumbh’ great by offering donations, but today’s rulers are trying to take credit for the work just by renaming the city to ‘Prayagraj’,” the former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav tweeted on Monday. “They (BJP) have even re-named ‘Ardh Kumbh’ as ‘Kumbh’. This mocks our tradition and belief.”4. “There is already an area which is called ‘Prayag’, there was no need to rename ‘Allahabad’ as ‘Prayagraj’. This decision is an attempt to disturb and toy with the history of the nation. Allahabad has its own historic importance and changing the name of the city will definitely not be accepted by the people of the country,” Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Onkarnath Singh Singh said in a statement on Saturday.5. Earlier the name of ‘Mughalsarai Junction’ was changed to ‘Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction’ by the the Yogi Aditynath government in Uttar Pradesh. Deen Dayal Upadhyay was a noted RSS ideologue.6. The seers of different akharas had met CM Yogi in Lucknow and had urged him to change the name of ‘Allahabad’ as ‘Prayagraj’. "We have requested the chief minister to change Allahabad's name to Prayagraj. We are sure that the chief minister will accept our demand," Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP) head Mahant Narendra Giri had told reporters.7. A belief also goes that Brahma, the creator of universe, performed or attended a sacrificial ritual at Prayag. Some texts relate this place with the son-in-law of Lord Shiva and Parvati who ruled over this place before moving to the Sapta Saindhav region. His name was Yayati. He was married to Ashokasundari, the daughter of Parvati and Lord Shiva.8. The Sapta Saindhav region is the most referred place in Rig Veda. It is the area captured by Indus and now extinct mystical river Saraswati and their tributaries. Yayati had five sons, who went on to give the five most prominent tribes mentioned in Rig Veda.9. The association of Allahabad or Prayag with the Kumbh Mela is old. It was also known as Magh Mela. But its antiquity is not certain. Chinese traveller and historian Hiuen Tsang mentions about it in his memoir. Hiuen Tsang talks about an ancient annual fair being held at Prayag in 644 AD.10. Allahabad will be called Prayagraj with immediate effect.
