To commemorate the ratification of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973, the United Nations General Assembly established this day in 2013.

World Wildlife Day 2023: Theme

  • ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation’ will be the focus of World Wildlife Day in 2023.
  • It stressed how crucial it is for governments, public society, and the commercial sector to work together to turn World Wildlife Day’s subject into actionable steps.
  • It focuses on a more immediate and audacious course of action that is required to cut emissions, speed up the adoption of renewable energy sources, and improve the ability to withstand the effects of climate change.
  • The opinions of indigenous peoples and local communities, who are the best keepers of biodiversity, must be given top priority.

World Wildlife Day 2023: History

  • Thailand recommended observing World Wildlife Day to honour and promote the preservation of the wild animals and plants that may be found all over the world.
  • The proposal was approved by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by resolution UN 68/205 on December 20, 2013, at its 68th session.
  • With the passage of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) worldwide in 1973, the resolution declared March 3 to be World Wildlife Day.
  • The main goals of the day are to increase public awareness of the value of wildlife and to encourage the protection of both species and their natural habitats.

Significance 

  • To raise awareness of the vital role that forests and animals play in sustaining the livelihoods of millions of people, particularly indigenous and local communities, World Wildlife Day 2023 will be of utmost importance.
  • This day serves to highlight the need of protecting forests and wildlife to preserve natural harmony and promote sustainable development.
  • It gives us the chance to reflect on our relationship with nature and recognise the urgent need to protect and conserve species and their habitats.
  • World Wildlife Day 2023 seeks to advance a more harmonious coexistence between people and wildlife by promoting conservation measures and sustainable resource use.
