World Heritage Day 2023: World Heritage Day is a significant occasion that encourages the defence and maintenance of cultural assets all across the world. It serves as a reminder that cultural heritage is something that continues to be important today and will do so in the future.

World Heritage Day 2023: History
The Venice Charter, also known as the 1964 International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites, set forth the guiding principles on which the ICOMOS organisation was founded.
The International Council of Mountains and Sights proposed holding World Heritage Day on April 18 during a symposium in Tunisia in 1982.
Then, in November 1983, a decision was made to observe World Heritage Day on April 18 each year at the 22nd session of the UNESCO Conference.

The purpose of World Heritage Day is to spread awareness of the value of protecting cultural heritage and the world’s monuments and sites from decay and destruction.
This day was created in 1983 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to promote awareness of the importance of heritage assets and the need to protect them for future generations. Additionally, the day offers a chance to promote global collaboration in cultural heritage preservation and to recognise the diversity of cultures around the world.

World Heritage Day 2023: Theme
The theme for World Heritage Day 2023 is “Heritage Changes”. In response to the UN Decade of Action, ICOMOS states that the theme of HERITAGE CHANGES provides the opportunity to address questions about learning about traditional knowledge systems and ways of knowing about climate action, as well as how to use a cultural heritage focus to support equitable protection of vulnerable communities through climate action.
