The report defines life expectancy at 60 as the average number of additional years a person can anticipate living. The report predicts that by 2050, the elderly population's proportion in India may double, making up 20 per cent of the total population. Presently, those aged above 60 constitute 13.9 per cent of the global population, and this number is expected to double to 2.1 billion by 2050, comprising 22 per cent of the world's total population. India is not exempt from this trend. As of July 1, 2022, India had 149 million people aged 60 and above, accounting for approximately 10.5 per cent of the country's population. The report anticipates that by 2050, the share of elderly individuals will double to 20.8 per cent, with a total of 347 million.
