History and Significance
A significant temple festival with a history dating back more than 200 years marks Thrissur Pooram. Shakthan Thampuran, who ruled the Kingdom of Cochin from 1790 to 1805, is credited with founding the celebration. The origin of the event may be traced back to 1796, when a number of temples were forbidden from attending the well-known Arattupuzha Pooram because of persistent rain. Shakthan Thampuran made the decision to organise his own celebration, Thrissur Pooram, on the same day in May after hearing their grievances. Since then, Kerala has come to regard the festival as a significant cultural and spiritual occasion.
One of the biggest gatherings in Asia, Thrissur Pooram is a famous festival that draws a tonne of tourists every year. Arattupuzha Pooram was Kerala’s most important temple celebration before Thrissur Pooram. The Vadakkunnathan Temple’s presiding deity, Lord Vadakkunnathan, is invited to receive prayers and reverence from other temples in and around Thrissur during Thrissur Pooram. Over fifty decorated elephants parade in a grand procession as part of the festival, which also includes Chenda Melam and Pancha Vadyam traditional music.
