Raksha Bandhan 2024: Avoid Tying Rakhi During This Period For A Fortunate Celebration

Raksha Bandhan the festival's origin lies in the mythological victory of Indra over demons through the Raksha Sutra.

Raksha Bandhan, a cherished festival celebrating the pure relationship between brothers and sisters, has been observed by Hindus for generations. This occasion enhances the sense of mutual responsibility and love between siblings.

The rakhi, or protective thread, is central to Raksha Bandhan. It can range from simple cotton threads to elaborate silk or even precious gold and silver varieties. Typically, sisters tie the rakhi on their brothers, but it can also be tied by Brahmins, gurus, or young girls to their respected family members (such as daughters to their fathers). Occasionally, rakhi is also tied to prominent figures or dignitaries.

Raksha Bandhan 2024: Auspicious Timing

This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on August 19. However, according to astrological guidelines, the Bhadra period on this day will be from 05:52 AM to 01:32 PM. It is deemed inauspicious to tie rakhi during this time. The ideal period for tying rakhi begins after 01:32 PM and lasts until 04:21 PM. Additionally, the time between 06:56 PM and 09:08 PM during Pradosh is also considered auspicious. For Upakarma and Yajnopavita rituals, the entire day of August 19 is favorable, as Bhadra does not affect these activities. Thus, these rituals can be performed throughout the day after sunrise. Remember to observe the auspicious times while tying rakhi and celebrate this meaningful festival with joy.

History of Raksha Bandhan

Long ago, the gods fought for a twelve-year war against the demons and were defeated, with the demons seizing control of heaven. Distraught by the loss, Indra approached his Guru, Brihaspati, seeking guidance. Indra’s wife, Indrani, overheard the conversation and mentioned that the following day was Shravan Shukla Purnima. She advised Indra to prepare Raksha Sutra according to the rules and have it tied by Brahmins, which would ensure victory.

The next day, Indra followed Indrani’s advice, performing Rakshabandhan with the Raksha Vidhan ritual. The demons, terrified by the powerful Raksha Sutra, fled when Indra, riding his mighty Airavat elephant, returned to the battlefield. Thus, Indra emerged victorious, and the festival of Raksha Bandhan has been celebrated ever since.
