Six deaths reported in Himmatnagar Hospital of Gujarat on Monday were believed to be due to the Chandipura vesiculovirus, or Chandipura virus. Two children being treated for CHPV died of viral infection in Aravalli of Gujarat. Apart from this, four bodies were found on Saturday in the Sabarkantha district, which the doctors suspect are related to the virus that can cause encephalitis, an inflammation of the tissues of the brain, PTI reported. According to MA Siddiqui, District Health Officer of Aravalli, “We have deployed 50 teams for extensive dusting. I appeal to farmers to spray insecticides and pesticides so that the breeding of mosquitoes comes to an end. Children should wear full-sleeved clothes to save themselves from mosquitoes.’

What Is Chandipura Virus

The Chandipura virus represents the genus Vesiculovirus, family Rhabdoviridae. The name Rhabdoviridae was chosen because the structure of the virus is bullet-shaped, from the Greek word “rhabdo,” meaning ‘rod-shaped’.

Apart from India, CHPV viruses have been isolated from vectors in Nigeria, Senegal, and Sri Lanka.

Symptoms

The Chandipura virus typically causes a sudden increase in high body temperature, which is then followed by seizures, diarrhea, vomiting, and decreased consciousness, finally leading to death. Reports indicate that children who are infected with the virus die within 48-72 hours of showing symptoms. Encephalitis, or the inflammation of the brain tissues, is reported as the primary cause of death in patients with the virus.

Treatment

Doctors treat Chandipura virus with emergency treatment to prevent the progression of damage to neurons or nerve cells due to a lack of adequate blood supply in order to prevent long-term neurological deficits. Decongestant drugs include mannitol and furosemide to prevent cerebral edema by monitoring intracranial pressure. No specific antiviral agents are available for treating Chandipura virus infection.

Active control of the virus only includes compulsory good nutrition, health, and hygiene with increased awareness amongst the population.

Chandipura Viral Encephalitis CHPV causes fever, flu-like illness with acute encephalitis — inflammation of the brain. It is from the pathogen of Vesiculovirus genus of the family Rhabdoviridae. The transmission takes place from vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and sand flies, amongst others.
