Odisha Foundation Day 2023: Today, Odisha, celebrates its 87th foundation day, also known as Utkar Divas. In 1936, it became the first state founded based on language. It used to be part of Bihar. The people of Odisha are known for their simplicity and honesty.

Odisha Foundation Day 2023: Meaning

Utkal Divas is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout Odisha. On this day, people pray for the health of the state and its people. Celebrating Utkal Divas is an important step in affirming the identity of the Odia Indians who had to fight for this independence.

Since its creation in 1936, the date of Utkal Divas is 1st April and will remain one of the most important days in Odisha’s history. That is why some call it Orissa Day.

Odisha Foundation Day 2023: History and Significance 

Odisha became a free state after being separated from Bihar on 1 April 1936. The partition was the result of a 30-year revolution that took place among prominent leaders of the people of Odia. Under British rule, the Bengal region consisted of what is now Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha.

Originally, the state was called Orissa. It received its current name, Odisha, after Lok Sabha passed the Orissa Act and the 113th Amendment to the Constitution in 2011 and renamed it. It later became an independent state with its capital at Cuttack.

Odisha Foundation Day 2023: Importance

However, the movement gained momentum under Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, Utkala Gopabandhu Das, Bhanj Deo, Krushna Chandra Gajapati, Nilakanta Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati and several others, gained great support from the people and led to the establishment of Odisha on April 1, 1936, almost ten years before India achieved independence with Sir John Hubbak as its first governor. This is now commemorated as Odisha Foundation Day, Utkal Divas, or Odisha Day.

The people of the state celebrate the Utkal Divas or Odisha Day on April 1st of each year to commemorate the state’s glorious past and honour the political struggles that led to the state’s emergence as an independent political.
