Odisha Foundation Day 2023: Today, Odisha, also known as Utkar Diva, celebrates its 87th anniversary. In 1936, it became the first state founded on the basis of the language. It used to be part of Bihar. The people of Odisha are known for their simplicity and honesty.
Why do we celebrate Odisha foundation day?
The establishment of the Utkar Sammilani cultural and social organization ignited Odia’s struggle for independence. The group was founded in 1903 by Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, who advocated the formation of Odisha as an independent state. Therefore also seen as the Utkal Divas honoring great leaders.

When was Odisha called Utkal?
Odisha Day, also known as Utkal Divas and Utkala Dibasa, is celebrated annually on April 1st to commemorate the struggle for a distinct political identity in the state that was once part of Kalinga and ruled by Emperor Ashok. Kharavela was later remembered as a conqueror and defender of Jainism until the Mughals invaded and conquered Jainism.
