Makar Sankranti is traditionally celebrated every year on the 14th of January following various local customs like crop harvesting, kite flying, etc, offering prayers to the Sun God, and enjoying different kinds of sweet prepared with sesame seed, jaggery, nuts etc.

Makar Sankranti 2025: The sky will be decked up with colorful kites as people celebrate Makar Sankranti on 14 January. Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious and widely celebrated festivals in India. This day marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makar in Sanskrit). It is traditionally celebrated every year on the 14th of January following various local customs like crop harvesting, kite flying, etc, offering prayers to the Sun God, and enjoying different kinds of sweet prepared with sesame seed, jaggery, nuts etc.

Kite flying is one of the activities loved by children during this festival. However, while we celebrate the festival, it’s important to remain safe and avoid any mishap.

There are varieties of kites, available in different shapes and sizes. However, the quality of the thread ensures the airworthiness of a kite and also the maneuverability in the sky. The two types of threads used for kite flying are saadi and manjha. Notably, in India, despite the ban on it, Chinese manja is widely used. It is made of nylon and metallic coating, which makes it deadly.

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind while flying kites:

Don’t use sharp manja (thread), try using cotton one.

Use safe, eco-friendly kite strings such as plain cotton threads without glass, metal, or synthetic coatings.

Don’t fly close to roads, near people, especially young children.

Keep clear of electric power lines, electrical signs, and TV and radio aerials.

Don’t fly in winds stronger than recommended.

Parents are advised to monitor children when flying kite from rooftop or elevated location to prevent fall/ accidents.

Safety Tips For Riders

Motorcyclists and cyclists are advised to wear protective gears like helmets and full clothes to minimize risks from stray threads.

Riders must install anti-chinese manja guards on helmets.

Pedestrians should use scarves to cover their necks while outdoors.

Avoid flying near roads or highways as Chinese manja is very sharp.

Safety Tips While Using Chinese Manja

Inspect the string for any visible defects or loose threads. If it’s too sharp or damaged, discard it to avoid accidents.

Wear gloves to protect your hands from cuts and injuries while handling the string.

Children should always be supervised while flying kites with Chinese Manja.

Consider using safer, non-toxic kite strings.

Once done, dispose of Used String Properly.
