Remember the days when our mothers and grandmothers used to take out big jars of honey as soon as winter started to approach? Sore throat, cold, cough – there has always been one solution to everything! Honey – the elixir that is extremely rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants has been a part of every Indian household during winters. It increases immunity and protects us against winter problems such as viral and even air pollution. During winters, when our body uses excess energy to keep itself warm, honey provides our body with the required energy to complete our daily tasks. However, with increased adulteration in honey, it has become more important than ever to choose the right honey for you and your family. Three main issues affecting the purity of honey are C3 and C4 sugars (sugars from cane, corn, and rice), and antibiotic or Pesticide Residues. So how do you check if you are consuming the right honey? Are there any traditional methods to test the purity of honey at home? According to Prakash Kejriwal, Owner, Nature's Nectar, there is unfortunately no method to test the purity of honey at home. Honey is one of the most contaminated foods in the world and adulteration in honey has become so high-tech that the only way to test its purity is through lab tests. Nature's Nectar is one of the few honey brands that gives a proof of its product's purity and passes the NMR test. The NMR or Nuclear Magnetic Resonance test is a comprehensive testing criterion for examining the quality, adulteration, and authenticity of honey. "If you are consuming honey that is not 100% pure, then you should know that it is doing you more harm than benefit. Impure honey should be avoided at all costs," said Kejriwal. Nature's Nectar is a part of the Kejriwal Group, the pioneer of honey exports from India since 1996. It is also the first True Source certified company in the world. Being one of the largest honey exporters from India, Nature's Nectar sources honey from all over the country and works directly with over 30,000 beekeepers who are trained and paid a fair price by the company. Since the purity of honey cannot be determined by simply looking at the bottle, consumers are advised to review the label to look for NMR testing. Even if a brand claims to sell "pure honey," its product can be diluted with C3 and C4 sugars. For this reason, it is always preferable to consume honey that is NMR-tested. "Honey is called Madhu in Sanskrit which literally translates as Amrit elixir. However, if it is not pure then it is close to a slow poison. So before you pick up a honey bottle next time, ask yourself – What is the cost of your health?" said Kejriwal.
