International Women’s Day 2023: History and Significance
The Socialist Party of America established National Women’s Day in New York on February 28, 1909. A labour activist named Theresa Malkiel proposed this as a way to commemorate the widespread protests against textile workers. German delegates later that year advocated the notion of a women’s day, though no exact date was specified, taking inspiration from American socialists.
In 1977, the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 8 as International Women’s Day in favour of women’s rights and world peace. International Women’s Day was first celebrated by the UN in 1975. Since that time, the UN has recognised the day by selecting a theme each year.
